The Department of Dance is excited to be sharing activities and accomplishments for the 2011-2012 academic year in this premiere interactive format on our newly redesigned website. Feel free to browse at your leisure and click on the underlined links for more information. We hope you enjoy this new green initiative as much as we did putting it together!
The Department of Dance extends its gratitude to the generous donations, funding, and support that ensure our Department’s success from our alumni, private donors, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Your support is crucial to our students and the future success of the dance program.
Our dance majors have reached beyond boundaries, presenting their original choreography in BFA projects at various site-specific locations around Columbus and beyond. Current undergraduate and graduate dancers have been performing around the U.S. and attending and presenting their research at prominent dance festivals and conferences. The MFA projects featured a variety of creative work at OSU Urban Art Space, Gateway Film Center, and NPAC. The dance faculty have also been busy creating work for performances featuring music by Steve Reich in Drums Downtown, in the DIRT at Plumb Hall, and in collaboration with the EMMA Lab at ACCAD. To enrich our students within the realm of dance film, we welcomed Mitchell Rose and his advanced editing courses to our rosters this year. Additionally, Associate Professor Dr. Melanye White Dixon has just completed her book about the influential dance instructor, Marion Cuyjet, and Professors Melanie Bales and Dr. Karen Eliot are completing their new anthology for the Oxford Press. The department hosted the Dance Literacy Symposium as well as the DNB at TRI. Several visiting artists came to share their work and enrich our students. As always, our alumni continue their creative work across the U.S. and abroad.
This year also gave rise to a substantial adjustment to our swing spaces as renovations progressed at Sullivant Hall. As we continue to experiment with innovative ways of presenting dance, we look forward to returning to a vanguard building that is specifically designed to complement our diverse and complex needs.
